Academic creativity and Industry throughput: how to get the best of both worlds

Host: Manuela M. Pereira

When I graduated from FCUL in 2003 as a licentiate in Biochemistry, I never imagined I would be here 20 years later talking about my career choices and how they have changed my life. Today, I am the Director of three Core Facilities within the COBRE Institute for Biomolecular Targeting (bioMT) that supports researchers at Dartmouth College, a prestigious Ivy league institution established in 1769 in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. I am responsible for all scientific, infrastructure and financial operations, strategic advancement and supervising of a team of PhD and MS level scientists. Our cores integrate insights from protein biochemistry and engineering, biophysics, high-resolution microscopy, and structural and computational biology with mentoring of junior faculty, scientific exchange, and administrative support. Since I joined the core facilities as a Research Scientist in 2018, we have implemented an integrated pipeline “gene to crystal”, for easy production and crystallization of recombinant proteins produced in bacterial, mammalian and insect systems and developed numerous in vitro or imaging-based approaches to study cellular processes. Our cores continue to grow and provide protein reagents, expertise, training opportunities and mentoring to over 80 research groups at Dartmouth on a daily basis.
